OUR HERITAGE
We are Fourth generation Stone Masons, I Myself have over 30 years working in heritage and conservation being my profession and passion.
I began my career in the United Kingdom working for a company that specialised in restoration and refurbishment. After many years working and gaining valuable experience, I worked my way up to project manager.
With the high-end work that was being delivered, we secured a working relationship for over 25 years up until the present day, with an award winning Heritage architect. Culminating work for the Duchy of Cornwall estate (Prince Charles) and some of the most prestigious projects in the South-West of England, Bath, U.K.
Some of our most distinguished projects include, Bowood estate, Wiltshire. The Royal Crescent, Bath. Crowe hall, Bath.
We moved to South Australia as a family in 2015 and I quickly secured a job as Head of the Masonry department for a well respected South Australian salt damp company.
With my sons showing a keen interest in heritage work, we decided to establish Artisan Stone Restorations.
OUR SERVICES
How to spot salt damp!
Salt attack and rising damp is a common problem home owners find themselves having to remedy.
But where should you start? How do you even know that your property is being effected by these two problems?
Firstly, we will answer what is rising damp and salt attack?
Rising damp is a common problem in which masonry building products (such as bricks and stone) use a capillary based action that draws moisture out of the ground and up (in the same way plants draw water out of the ground).
As many South Australian homes lack an adequate damp proof course, the moisture being drawn out of the ground by the masonry is able to freely move upwards into the walls.
This can the lead to salt attack!
Due to the extremely high ground salt content in South Australia, salt in soluble form is carried up into the masonry with the moisture through this capillary action!
After time, the moisture that has carried the salt into the wall will evaporate and leave behind salt in a crystallised form, this process will continue as the salt crystals grow and begin to damage the structural integrity of the masonry.
HOW DO YOU KNOW THAT YOU’RE BUILDING IS EFFECTED BY RISING DAMP OR SALT ATTACK
Here are some of the tell-tale signs that suggest Salt attack and rising damp are effecting your property:
Fretting mortar joints
Bubbling paint and plaster
Serious decomposition of the materials in the wall
Some people misunderstand and believe that as there is no salt visible on their property, they don’t have salt damp. However, sometimes there are no obvious signs of salt due to the rain simply washing it away!
NOW WE KNOW HOW TO SPOT IT, BUT HOW DO WE TREAT IT?
At Artisan Stone Restorations, we offer free no obligation quotes, meaning we will inspect your property and give you honest instructions on where to go next!

The importance of sub-floor ventilation!
Many homeowners don’t know how important adequate sub-floor ventilation is to the wellbeing of their property.
Firstly, what is a “sub-floor” and why does it need “ventilation”?
The majority of properties in Adelaide have wooden timber flooring, with a large empty space underneath.
This area is called the sub-floor!
Vents are commonly found around the base of the house, leading to the sub-floor area, which enables fresh free flowing air to move in and out, AND MORE IMPORTANTLY, ENSURING NO HUMID/MOIST AIR STAYS!
A number of things can cause your sub-floor vents to become blocked:
-
Internal masonry and mortar under salt attack (which frets leading to blockage)
-
Cobwebs
-
Remedial works
-
Everyday dust and debris
All of these problems inhibit the flow of air into the sub-floor.
Blockage of sub-floor vents can lead to a variety of problems, sometimes health threatening! And many home owners are unaware of this.
Here’s a list of problems that can occur when vents are blocked:
-
Cupping floorboards
-
Black mould
-
Damp smell
-
Floorboard Rot
-
Dampness of walls (commonly in wardrobes)
-
Termite infestation
How do you prevent this?
Preventing these common problems can sometimes be simple!
Artisan Stone Restorations offers a FREE Sub-floor vent check with our specialist equipment.
This enables us to give you piece of mind that your sub-floor vents are working correctly as they should.
